The International Day for Biological Diversity, observed every May 22, serves as a global reminder of the importance of preserving nature. This year, the theme set by the United Nations is “Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development.” It emphasizes that biodiversity conservation must go hand in hand with efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

As part of the academic community committed to sustainability, Tarumanagara University (Untar) continues to play an active role in supporting environmental conservation. One tangible example of this commitment is the integration of SDG principles into the curriculum across various study programs. Through this approach, Untar students are not only equipped with expertise in their respective fields but also nurtured with the awareness to contribute to sustainable development and environmental responsibility.

In addition, Untar implements various eco-friendly initiatives, such as community service projects focused on conservation, multidisciplinary research on ecosystems, and campaigns to reduce plastic waste and preserve green spaces on campus.

A notable example of Untar’s contribution to ecosystem preservation was the environmentally conscious social activity held on April 30, 2024, which involved mangrove planting and beach clean-up efforts. Organized in collaboration with the Seasoldier Foundation, this initiative engaged Untar lecturers, students, and staff as part of the university’s 65th Anniversary celebration and its support for SDG 14 (Life Below Water) and SDG 15 (Life on Land).

This activity underscored the vital role of universities in environmental conservation. The Seasoldier Chairperson expressed appreciation for Untar’s involvement and encouraged the continuation of such initiatives in the future. Students who participated also shared the positive impact of the activity, highlighting its benefits for both the environment and coastal communities.

Biodiversity is the foundation of human life. Healthy ecosystems provide us with clean air, water, food, and climate stability. However, threats to nature are becoming increasingly evident—from deforestation and pollution to climate change. Therefore, cross-sector collaboration and the awareness of the younger generation are essential keys to maintaining harmony between nature and development.

Happy International Day for Biological Diversity 2025!

Together with Untar, let’s build a future in harmony with people, nature, and sustainable development.
