Eid al-Fitr is a special moment eagerly anticipated by Muslims across Indonesia. More than just a religious celebration, Eid is also a time to strengthen family bonds and embrace the rich tapestry of traditions found across different regions. At Tarumanagara University (Untar), the diversity of students from various ethnic and religious backgrounds reflects Indonesia’s cultural richness.

Here are 15 unique traditions commonly observed during Eid al-Fitr in different parts of the country:

Homecoming, or mudik, has become a cherished tradition for many who live away from their hometowns. This moment is an opportunity to return to their roots and reunite with extended family.

  1. Takbir Parade

On the night before Eid al-Fitr, people hold a takbir parade. This festive procession is usually enlivened with traditional drums (bedug), torches, and traditional musical instruments, adding to the joy of the night of victory.

  1. Grave Visits (Ziarah Kubur)

Before or after the Eid al-Fitr prayer, many families visit the graves of their parents or relatives to pray and remember them.

  1. Halal bi Halal

This tradition of asking and granting forgiveness symbolizes unity and togetherness. It’s not only practiced within families but also held in offices, schools, and even universities, such as at Untar.

In Bengkulu, there’s a unique tradition called Ronjok Sayak, where piles of coconut shells are burned on the night before Eid. This fiery display represents spirit and victory.

  1. Nyembah Belari in Bintan

In Bintan, children run from house to house with open hands, hoping to receive small treats or snacks from the residents.

  1. Muaro Jambi Mask Dance

In Jambi, during the Eid al-Fitr celebration, young people and children perform the Muaro Jambi Mask Dance, wearing unique masks made from dried gourds.

  1. Batobo in Riau

This tradition welcomes homecomers in Riau with a lively procession featuring rebana (traditional drums) before gathering for a communal iftar.

  1. Ngejot in Bali

This unique Balinese tradition reflects the spirit of sharing, where residents give ready-to-eat meals to their neighbors, regardless of religious differences.

  1. Binarundak in North Sulawesi

In Motoboi Besar, Bolaang Mongondow Raya, the community celebrates Eid al-Fitr with Binarundak—a tradition of cooking nasi jaha (sticky rice in bamboo) together after Eid, then sharing the meal as a sign of gratitude and togetherness.

  1. Eid Delicacies

We’re all familiar with the iconic Eid dishes, right? Ketupat, opor ayam, rendang, and a variety of traditional cookies always find their place on the dining table during Eid.

  1. Everything New

New clothes, new shoes, and new accessories are common traditions that symbolize a fresh start and spiritual renewal after a month of fasting.

  1. THR (Holiday Allowance)

It’s not just employees who receive THR—children often get salam tempel, small envelopes of money, from parents and relatives as part of the celebration.

  1. Eid Hampers

Sending hampers or gift parcels to family and colleagues has become a cherished tradition that strengthens social bonds.

  1. Sunnah Bath

Before heading to the Eid al-Fitr prayer, Muslims are encouraged to perform a sunnah bath as a form of spiritual purification.

Happy Eid al-Fitr 1446 Hijri!

Each of these traditions highlights the rich cultural diversity found across Indonesia. At Untar, the variety of students from different regions and religious backgrounds makes the celebration of Eid even more vibrant and full of stories. No matter which tradition is followed, the spirit of togetherness and tolerance remains the core value upheld in every Eid celebration.

Minal Aidin Wal Faidzin, please forgive me for any wrongdoings, both physically and emotionally. May this day of victory bring happiness, peace, and blessings to all of us. (VA/YS/AJ/VA)
