The Indonesian Catholic Journalists Association (PWKI) held a discussion themed “Food for All” during the New Year Opening event at the Tarumanagara University (Untar) Auditorium in Jakarta on Saturday (25/01/2025).

The event was attended by the Chairperson of the Tarumanagara Foundation, Prof. Dr. Ariawan Gunadi, S.H., M.H., Jakarta’s elected Deputy Governor Rano Karno, as well as several national figures, including House of Representatives (DPR RI) members Rieke Diah Pitaloka (PDI Perjuangan), Nurul Arifin (Golkar Party), Ida Fauziyah (National Awakening Party), and Dina Lorenza (Democratic Party). Also present were several Catholic priests and interfaith youth leaders.

“This food issue has become a central concern both in Indonesia and globally. Untar fully supports the government’s program on this matter,” said Prof. Ariawan in his speech.

Furthermore, Prof. Ariawan emphasized that the food issue has become increasingly important, especially after Indonesia officially joined BRICS, a group of major world economies including Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. With BRICS representing approximately 40% of the global population, food security programs have become a strategic priority for Indonesia.

This food program is also one of the key agendas in the Asta Cita vision of the Prabowo-Gibran administration. Jakarta’s elected Deputy Governor, Rano Karno, also expressed his support for this program, as it is considered beneficial for improving farmers’ welfare.

“This program will enhance farmers’ welfare. We will support it, especially in the distribution aspect,” said Rano Karno, who is also a politician from PDI Perjuangan.

Meanwhile, Widiastuti, Deputy for Trade Regulation and Food Distribution Coordination at the Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs, added that food distribution, the development of new rice fields, and irrigation improvements are crucial steps to achieving food self-sufficiency. (AJ/YS/VC)
