This date was chosen to commemorate the establishment of the National Library (Perpusnas) of the Republic of Indonesia (RI) which was established on May 17, 1980.
The main purpose of this commemoration is to increase the reading interest of Indonesian people and strengthen the role of libraries as a source of knowledge.
