UNTAR Faculty of Medicine hosts a seminar with the cooperation of Indonesian Pediatrician Association (DKI Jakarta branch) entitled “Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs) : Prevention and Management in Pediatrics.” This seminar was attended by Rector Prof. Dr. Agustinus Purna Irawan and the head of Indonesian Pediatrician Association Prof. Dr. dr. Rini Sekartini, Sp.A(K), on Sunday (8/4) in Universitas Tarumanagara Auditorium.
According to Dr. Herwanto., Sp.A, head committee of the seminar, there are reportedly more than 38 million deaths per year due to NCDs and 82% occurred in low and middle-income countries.
The impact of NCDs on children and adolescents is very significant. Morbidity and mortality of children is quite high due to treatable illnesses, such as asthma and type 1 diabetes mellitus. These conditions could be prevented by nurturing the mother’s nutrients before and during pregnancy, consuming good nutrition, living in a healthy environment, avoiding injuries, freeing children from tobacco and cigarette smoke, and the promotion of mental health.
In his welcoming speech, the rector expressed that the collaboration between UNTAR’s Faculty of Medicine and the Indonesian Pediatrician Association is really essential in finding the solution for health problems faced by the society today.
