The Faculty of Arts and Design at Tarumanagara University held a national seminar on November 25^th,  2015 with “Art and Design: Past, Present, and Future” as the theme. This seminar also had another function which is a call for papers. The speakers in the first session affirmed the importance of Arts and Design in finding the history based-red line as a learning method which could develop and build arts, cultures, and the future. “Be familiar with your own country” was one of the topics presented by the main speaker in that seminar, Jay Wijayanto, Creative Economics expert. Wijayanto’s advice for Indonesian designers was to appreciate our various and rich culture. The problem is how to use the global approach (not the ornamental) by utilizing our essential local wisdom. Both of the speakers in the panel discussion were Prof. Drs. Widagdo Dipl. Inn. Arch. and Prof. Drs. Yusuf Afendi Djalari, MA. Both of them gave their explanations of the world and Indonesia’s design development. Prof. Widagdo affirms the understanding of design history to continuously develop in contextual forms on our earth. While Prof. Yusuf tried to analyze and explain in a deeper level regarding how Korea has the ability to be a great society while appreciating and developing their eastern traditions and culture. A designer is in charge of shaping Indonesia’s identity and to be responsible in dedicating a humanity design. In this seminar, there were other guests such as Professor of Kriya from ISI Yogyakarta Prof. Gustami, the General Head of the central HDII, Lea Aviliani Aziz, the Head of HDII Jakarta, Chairul Amal Septono, the Head of ADGI Jakarta, and Rege Indrastudianto. The head committee of this seminar was the lecturer from the Faculty of Arts and Design UNTAR, Kurnia Setiawan. This is the first step for academicians, designers, and the integrity education institution to have a role in developing designs for the world and designs for universities in Indonesia.
