In the past 15 – 20 years, there have been 3 factors which influence and drive Indonesia’s city development; Urbanization, Globalization, and Privatization.
The impact of the first factor, Urbanization process, is to make the human civilization history for the first time, our earth has a large population.
In this case, Indonesia is no exception. Between the years 2010-2030, the urban population in Indonesia will double from 95 million to 190 million people. This city development means that the increase of the city’s population every year is 4.7 million, which is equivalent to 4 cities as large as Semarang. To anticipate that rapid urbanization increase, we need to expand and develop the cities to be similar to 100 cities as large as Yogyakarta with a population minimum of one million for each city.
The second factor is the Economic Globalization process which brings structural changes in various aspects of urban life, either for social-economics, cultural, or spatial and environmental aspects.
The third factor is a Privatization system which plays a large role in a city’s development.
Based on the Democratization process, a city’s development nowadays not only becomes a government issue but our issue together with the government, private sectors, and society as a whole. The important role of the private investor, developer, or operator has another specialization in various urban services which has been monopolized by the government in the past, such as the health service department and education.
