The idea to establish a university was first created in 1957 by a group of social workers in the Candra Naya’s Social Association, called Sin Ming Hui. Based on the initiative of Drs. Kwee Hwat Djien, the group agreed to create a foundation named Tarumanagara on June 18th, 1959. The Tarumanagara formation was confirmed through notaries deed E. Pondang No. 54 on September 11th, 1959.

The name Tarumanagara was taken from one of the kingdoms in the land of Sunda a long time ago. The Tarumanagara kingdom reached it’s prime in the 6th century, while under the rulership of King Purnawarman. This kingdom left behind some inscriptions spread across parts of West Java and Jakarta. One of the more well-known inscriptions can be found in Bogor, located at the point where the Ciaruteun river and the Cisadane river meet.

On July 3rd, 1959, the Tarumanagara name was proposed by P.K. Ojong, SH to be used as the name of the foundation and university. The idea was also supported by Moh. Said. In addition to Sing Ming Hui’s entity, here are the names of the original Tarumanagara founders: Drs. Kwee Hwat Djien (H.K. Santoso), Mr. Auw Jong Peng Koen (P.K. Ojong), Drs. The intention and purpose of this foundation is to “Develop and improve the quality of education, teaching and culture amongst the community based on the human formation of the gifted and virtuous people of Indonesia.”

As a first attempt, on October 15th, 1959, based in the historic building, Candra Naya, which continues to stand majestically on Jalan Gajah Mada No. 188, Jakarta, the foundation established the College of Economics Tarumanagara. The original professors were Drs. Kho Oen Bik and Drs. Lo Kiem Tjing, who also served as Dean and Vice President of the Economic Department. Furthermore, in order to implement the provisions of Law College No. 22, 1961, based on notarial act E. Pondaag in Jakarta on September 20th,1962 and the amendments to the Articles of Association, the Tarumanagara Foundation officially  became Tarumanagara University on October 1st, 1962 under the leadership of Prof. Sindian Isa Djajadiningrat, SH, as the Acting Chairman of the Presidium. At the same time, Prof. Drs. Sarbini was appointed as Dean of the Faculty of Economics, University of Tarumanagara and Prof. Sindian Isa Djajadiningrat, S.H. was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Law, University of Tarumanagara.

In an earlier meeting held on September 18th, 1961, the founders established a committee for the Faculty of Law, consisting of: RM Padmosumasto, S.H., Prof. Sindian Isa Djajadiningrat, SH, Dahlan Nazir, Thian Yap Hien, SH, and Suwarjo Ronojudo, S.H.

As a result of a meeting held by this committee on June 31st, 1962, the committee decided to appoint Prof. Sindian Isa Djajadiningrat, S.H. as the Dean of the Faculty of Law.

On February 3rd, 1960, a meeting was held to discuss the plans for the vocational technical school. On October 24th, 1960, the foundation appointed Ir. Ong Tjing Jong to form a preparatory committee of the establishment of the engineering school. His work was later discussed at the foundation meeting on September 7th, 1962. At that time, the foundation decided to establish a Vocational School of Architecture and chose Ir. Hatmadi Pinandjoyo as the chairman and Ir. W. Pragantha Chong as secretary.

At the inauguration date of October 1st, 1962, the school established the Faculty of Engineering majoring in Architecture, which later became one of the oldest private Faculty of Engineering majoring in Architecture departments in Indonesia. Since that time, Ir. Hatmadi Pinandjoyo was given the task to build Bina Karya Design Bureau.  Ir. W. Pragantha  Chong eventually became the first Dean of the Faculty of Engineering.

On October 1st, 1962, Tarumanagara University simultaneously established several faculties: Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Engineering, Department of Architecture, and the Faculty of English Literature.

As a consequence of the students’ struggles to overthrow the Old Order and enforce the New Order, lecture schedules could not continue as planned. At that time, the Faculty of Modern Languages Department of English had been established but was forced to close, and students, with a heavy heart, were forced to move to the FIB, University of Indonesia.

1967 was the beginning of the UNTAR revival. It was the first time the Jalan S. Parman’s campus was used with a festive opening ceremony. For the first time in the school’s history, the university’s activities were covered by TVRI and was broadcasted the following day. The event was attended by the deputy governor at that time, Dr. R. Soewondo, whom later served as the chairman of the foundation in 1974.

In the 1994/1995 school year, Tarumanagara University opened two new faculties: the Faculty of Psychology and the Faculty of Visual Art and Design. The opening of the Faculty of Information Technology soon followed, which had previously been running as informatics engineering courses in 1992/1993.

Tarumanagara University is continuing to grow as one of the leading private universities in Indonesia, and has been managing eight faculties; Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Psychology, Faculty of Visual Art and Design, Faculty of Information Technology, and the Faculty of Communication. To further compliment and support the different departments of study we offer, the university has also opened a continuing education program for several fields of science; Master of Law, Master of Civil Engineering, Master of Management, Master of Urban and Regional Planning, Master of Psychology, Master of Accounting, Accounting Professional Program, Master of Architecture, Doctoral of Civil Engineering and Doctoral of Law.

1967 was the year of the beginning of a revival for Tarumanagara University. After many years, the campus on Jalan Jend. S. Parman, West Jakarta, was inaugurated. At the same time, faculties, departments, and programs of study were consolidated, except for the faculty of modern languages which had not managed to return.

The Faculty of Economics, which was founded in 1959, offered a major in Business Economics. This department then changed its name to the Department of Management with Bachelor Degree in Management Studies.

To assess the quality of higher education, the government has established a National Accreditation Board (BAN) for Higher Education to accredit courses at public and private universities. Accreditation is divided into ranks; Rank A, B, C, and D. There are a number of requirements that must be met to achieve the rank of accreditation, and the process of achievement must be through the consolidation of existing courses.

In order to consolidate these courses, Tarumanagara University is trying to increase the amount and level of academic faculty positions, as well as improving students’ learning achievement. Tarumanagara University also seeks to improve the quality of science at the university through further education so that Academics may be able to obtain a Doctoral degree, as well as increase scientific research activities.

Higher education quality is reflected in the university at the time the product is directed to the product of scientists, professional products, and product of knowledge created by Scientists and professionals. Scientists and professionals are a result of studying, however, Science is the result of research, dedication to community service and scientific journals.

The National Accreditation Board for Higher Education (BAN PT) has accredited a number of courses at the Tarumanagara University with A rank’s accreditation, resulting in students being able to obtain a Bachelor degree in Management, Bachelor of Accounting, Bachelor of Law, Bachelor of Architecture, Bachelor of Civil Engineering, Bachelor of Computer Science, Bachelor of Psychology, Bachelor of Interior Design, Bachelor of Visual Communication Design, and a Master’s degree in Legal Studies.
