The rapid and widespread of information is undeniable in this digital era. However, the recipient must also verify the authenticity of the information since there is a high chance of the information not being true. Because, false information, also known as hoax, could result badly in the development of the nation’s intelligence and togetherness.
“False news and provocative information has caused the uncertainty in maintaining the unity in diversity principle, peace, and fairness,” states Dr. Eko Harry Susanto, M.Si during his speech titled “Social Media, Hoax, and Threats to Unity in Diversity” in front of the graduates of Universitas Tarumanagara at Jakarta Convention Center, on Saturday (28/10).
The 70th Graduation of Universitas Tarumanagara was attended by the Coordinator of Kopertis III, Dr. Illah Sailah., MS, the Founder of Tarumanagara Foundation, Drs. Indra Gunawan Masman, MBA, and the Chairman of Tarumanagara Foundation, Dr. Gunardi, S.H., M.H. This year’s graduation consists of 1303 graduates from the Bachelor, Master, and Doctoral programs, as well as the professional education of eight faculties and also post graduate.
According to the political communication expert, who is also the previous dean of the Communication Faculty of Universitas Tarumanagara, social media has a huge influence on the information flow of this era. However, the high amount of hoax circulating in social media is undeniable. Therefore, universities shall support the anti-hoax movement. “The false information can potentially disrupt the principle of unity in diversity and it is not in accordance with the spirit of Sumpah Pemuda which was established by the youths 89 years ago,” emphasizes Dr. Eko Harry Susanto, who is now the Director of Learning of Universitas Tarumanagara.
In addition, the Chairman of the Faculty of Economics Alumni and also the Founder of Helios Capital, Hadi Cahyadi, S.E., MBA, delivers an oration to the graduates of Untar. He urges the graduates to be persistent in the business world. “One of the characteristics of Untar graduates is their persistence in achieving their goals and I believe that this is the key to success of many Untar graduates,” states Hadi Cahyadi.
